Selecting the correct size Froggymouth
Observe the lips of the patient, without any smile or contraction, and assess which size will not touch the corner of the lips. Aim for 2mm of space between the corner of the lips and the edge of the Froggymouth device. It’s better to choose a model that is slightly smaller in relation to the mouth, rather than one that is too large.

Use & Protocol
How do I choose the correct Froggymouth size?
The Froggymouth comes in three sizes: Small (blue), Medium (red), and Large (purple). The rule: horizontally, the device should be slightly smaller than the patient’s mouth — aim for approximately 2 mm of clearance between the edge of the device and the corners of the lips. A device that is too large will stretch the corners and tends to cause drooling.
- Small (#150-7469) – generally suitable for most patients under 13
- Medium (#150-7467) – generally suitable for most adults and teenagers
- Large (#150-7468) – generally suitable for a minority of adult patients with a wider mouth
When uncertain between two sizes, always choose the smaller one.
Can patients use a tablet, phone, or book instead of a TV?
It’s important for patients to keep their head upright and look straight ahead, for example while watching television, reading, or doing a quiet activity. Tablets, phones, and books tend to cause the head to tilt forward, which disrupts the horizontal lingual plane and may interfere with the recommended treatment position. If a patient doesn’t have a TV at home, a computer monitor raised to eye level is an acceptable substitute.
How long does Froggymouth treatment last?
Treatment ends based on the practitioner’s clinical assessment of tongue posture correction – not simply when a fixed number of weeks have elapsed. Most treatments last between 2 and 8 months. Functional improvement is confirmed by observing the patient swallowing naturally when they are not expecting to be assessed, or by using the Speech Exercise (counting 1 to 20 with teeth lightly clenched).
Can patients wear the device for longer than 15 minutes?
The Froggymouth documented protocol for wear time is 15 minutes per day. Currently there is no comparative clinical evidence demonstrating that wear beyond 15 minutes provides additional therapeutic benefit.
Note: Make sure patients understand that wearing it twice as long one day does not exempt them from wearing it the next day. Daily wear is essential.
Can patients wear Froggymouth at night?
Night wear is not recommended – the validated treatment protocol consists of one uninterrupted 15-minute session per day.
Is Froggymouth compatible with orthodontic appliances?
Yes — Froggymouth is worn between the lips and is compatible with almost all orthodontic appliances, including aligners, brackets, retainers, and Carriere® Motion™. It can be used before, during, or after active treatment. The exception is appliances that prevent elevation of the lingual dome, such as a palate expander or Quad Helix. In these cases, begin Froggymouth therapy once the appliance has been removed and the anatomy allows completion of the secondary swallowing sequence.
Note: If another provider (speech therapist, osteopath) is prescribing Froggymouth, notify the treating orthodontist – the functional improvements may contribute to the stability of orthodontic treatment. Preliminary clinical evidence also suggests that, in specific clinical situations, adjunctive myofunctional therapy may help optimize treatment efficiency.
Can patients wear Froggymouth alongside active orthodontic treatment?
Yes. Froggymouth is designed to be used concurrently with orthodontic treatment when the anatomical environment permits. Wearing Froggymouth alongside aligners or brackets supports functional balance and may contribute to improved functional outcomes and reduced risk of relapse.
Indications & Contraindications
At what age can Froggymouth treatment begin?
Froggymouth can be prescribed from age 3. The device supports the transition from primary (infantile) to secondary (adult) swallowing, making it appropriate once the patient has established chewing and the deciduous molars have appeared. There is no upper age limit.
What are the primary indications for Froggymouth?
The ideal indication is poor tongue posture, which may present as:
- Atypical (tongue-thrust) swallowing
- Open-mouth posture or mouth breathing
- Low resting tongue position
- Articulation or speech disorders related to tongue function
These dysfunctions may be associated with dentofacial deformities, altered breathing patterns and postural imbalance. Management of the underlying orofacial dysfunction may contribute to overall functional improvement.
What are the contraindications to Froggymouth?
Contraindications include:
- Children under 3 years of age
- High-arched palate or significant dental malformations
- Persistent sucking habits
- Untreated structural nasal obstruction
- Wearing of devices that prevent lifting of the tongue (e.g. palatal expander)
- Known hypersensitivity or allergy to any of the materials in the device
- Severe neuromuscular deficits (e.g. facial paralysis, muscular dystrophy) affecting orofacial motor function
- Lack of cooperation or persistent refusal by the patient to wear the device
- Intense pain or inflammation in the orofacial region
- Local infections and complications involving the teeth and periodontium
- Hereditary angioedema
- Any other situation preventing the root of the tongue from lifting upwards
Won’t the lips-open position promote mouth breathing while wearing the device?
Improved tongue posture may contribute to nasal breathing. While it is physically possible to breathe through the mouth while wearing Froggymouth, progressive acquisition of physiological tongue posture that the device promotes actively supports restoration of nasal breathing over the course of treatment.
Clinical Scenarios
Can Froggymouth support the treatment of anterior open bite?
Many anterior open bites are associated with tongue dysfunction – the tongue enters between the teeth during swallowing, creating the incisal gap. Combined with elimination of sucking habits, Froggymouth may contribute to improvement of tongue function and help limit progression of associated dentofacial deformities when combined with appropriate orthodontic management.
Can Froggymouth be used with patients who have disabilities?
Yes – because Froggymouth is passive, this may facilitate use in patients who have difficulty performing active myofunctional exercises.
Can Froggymouth help with sleep-disordered breathing or OSA?
Orofacial dysfunctions, including mouth breathing and altered tongue posture, may be associated with sleep-disordered breathing. Published clinical evidence reports functional improvements when Froggymouth is used as part of a complex orthodontic and myofunctional treatment approach in adolescents with OSA and dentofacial abnormalities.
Safety & Maintenance
How should patients clean the device?
After each use, patients should clean the device with a toothbrush and toothpaste, rinse with water, dry thoroughly, and store it in its case.
Is wearing the device painful?
Mild transient discomfort may occur during the initial adaptation period. Patients should contact their healthcare professional if pain is significant or persistent.
Manufacturing
What is the device made of and is it regulated?
Froggymouth is made from TPE (thermoplastic elastomers) – latex-free and phthalate-free. It is manufactured entirely in France. Froggymouth is regulated – it is a class I device in Europe (CE marked) and a class I device in the United States. Froggymouth is manufactured under an ISO 13485 certified quality management system.
